Visible changes can tell a homeowner that a tree deserves attention, but they cannot establish how much sound wood remains or whether the tree will withstand the next storm. Cavities, fungal fruiting bodies, cracks, dead branches, crown decline, and movement at the roots are observations, not verdicts. Their importance depends on where they occur, what part could fail, what it could strike, and whether the condition is new or changing.

Quick answer: reading visible change without judging stability

Start far enough away to see the complete crown, trunk, apparent lean, surrounding ground, and nearby people or property. Do not approach a tree that is moving, cracking, partly uprooted, lodged in another tree, or carrying suspended branches. Keep everyone away when a stem is splitting or the root plate has shifted. If pruning, support, or target management was only part of the recommendation, keep the unresolved actions visible. A completed invoice is not evidence that every risk item was addressed.
